Stara Baška is a two-kilometer-long town on the southern part of the island of Krk, with beaches and coves stretching along its entire length, from sandy, rocky to rocky. Unlike most other old coastal settlements characterized by dense houses with narrow winding streets, the shape of Stara Baška, where the houses are considerably distant from each other, is determined by the terrain on which the place is located. These are steep slopes on which the possibility of building is narrowed to a narrow space along the coast and only in certain locations in this belt. At the end of Stara Baška is Zala beach. Above the beach are the ruins of the church of St. Jerome. The place is located in an open bay of the same name, but which is protected from the bora by the aforementioned hills, and from the south by the Klobučac peninsula. However, Stara Baška is one of the windiest parts of the island. Due to the frequent and strong bora, the surrounding hills are bare, with low-growing vegetation, among which the medicinal sage plant is very common. More lush vegetation is only found along the narrow coastal belt and in areas protected from the bora. At the end of the village is a small port (harbor) which, in addition to the vessels of local residents, provides safety to many sailors and tourist boats in the summer. The depth in the port is great, especially on the inner side of the pier, but it is not a safe shelter from the storm. In front of the bay, about 3 km from the village, is the uninhabited islet of Galun. Stara Baška is 8 km from Punat, 16 km from Krk, 45 km from the Krk Bridge, and 70 km from Rijeka. Stara Baška was founded in the 14th century as a settlement of refugees from Turkish invasions, who founded their shepherd's village here at the end of the island. Until the second half of the 17th century, it was called Kraj or Pod Kraj, and the locals called it Krajanima. From the 17th century, the current name Stara Baška began to be used, although Baška is actually older than Stara Baška in terms of its founding.
